I had a nice married couple in my office this week. They had never created a Will, Power of Attorney or Healthcare documents even though they were in their mid-fifties. I asked them "why now?" Their answer was brilliant!

They said that they were giving the estate plan to one another for an anniversary present! They had all the stuff they needed already, so more stuff would just add to the clutter. What they DIDN'T HAVE was a way to distribute all that stuff after they were gone. Their Last Will and Testament handled that task nicely.

They had promised to take care of one another, you know, in sickness and in health- those marriage vows? What they didn't have was a plan to take care of one another if they were both out of commission. Their Power of Attorney handled that nicely. And their Advance Directive for Healthcare named someone to make medicaid decisions for them both if they were not able to speak for themselves. Lastly, they put on paper what their wishes were regarding their funeral, to save their children having to wonder what they might want.

It was a fitting anniversary present to one another and I told them I was going to blog about it. Don't get mad if I have your age wrong!
