It’s the most wonderful time of the year
With the kids jingle belling
And everyone telling you be of good cheer
It’s the most wonderful time of the year
Andy Williams was right! It is the most wonderful time of the year, but it is also something else- it is the most dangerous time of the year for many of us!
From Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, more people die than in any other similar period during the rest of the year. A combination of factors are thought to be the reason:
- Overeating/eating lots of “party” food
- Drinking too much and drinking and driving
- Driving late at night
- Being distracted from our usual exercise routines
- Neglecting nagging symptoms and putting them off until after the holidays
- Stressful family and work demands
- Cold weather/shoveling snow, chopping firewood, etc
- House fires created by fireplaces and holiday cooking
- Falls from ladders
All that to say that your chances of making it through another New Year’s Eve are still quite good. HOWEVER, don’t put off updating those estate plans if they need updating. If you don’t have even the most basic of plans in place, consider doing so before another year slips by. If you are in the midst of a divorce or newly-divorced, now is the time to update your plans to keep your ex out of your business. We can help you update your existing plans or put new plans in place. If you call us soon, we might even be able to get those plans in place before the year is out!
